Job description & scope of position
The UROP program allows full-time undergraduates at Boston University to conduct independent research projects for a semester, academic year, or summer. Students are able to pursue long-term projects and gain hands-on training in a field of their interest. Stipends are available for those accepted into this competitive program and can range from Funded Research Opportunities Grants (FROG) of up to $500 for project supplies to Student Research Awards (SRA) of up to $2000 during the school year and $3500 during the summer.
A defining feature of the UROP program is the one-on-one mentoring by a faculty member of Boston University. Faculty members directly supervise and train students and help ensure that the research projects are of exceptional quality. Students are required to work for approximately 10-20 hours per week during the academic year and to be full-time during the summer. A list of currently posted faculty projects can be found on the UROP website; however, the list is only a sample of possible projects available. Students should contact a potential mentor directly to learn of outside opportunities.
While it is not required for participants to conduct a research project that falls within the scope of their academic concentration, it is encouraged that the student have a general knowledge of the field that they will be studying. Students completing a UROP project at the ADC will have the opportunity to attend weekly consensus meetings and didactics to further their knowledge of neurology and neuropsychology.
Application information and deadlines
There are three application deadlines for the UROP program. For the fall semester, students must have applications completed by mid-September; for the spring semester, by mid-December; and for the summer, by late March. Applications can be found on the UROP website and it is suggested that students meet with a member of the UROP staff in order to review the application before official submission. In addition to the online application, students must also have their faculty mentor complete the online recommendation form. BU students interested in identifying a mentor in the Alzheimer’s Disease Center should contact Ms. Kristen Huber for more information. Please specify in the subject heading of your email that your email inquiry pertains to the “Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program.”
