Medical Student Summer Research Program

Job Description & Scope of Position

The Boston University Medical Student Summer Research Program offers approximately 30 competitive $3,000 scholarships to first-year Boston University medical students to support an 8-10 week research project with a BUMC faculty member.  This program allows medical students to gain mentored research experience in an established academic setting. In addition, medical students with particular interests in neurology and geriatrics have also worked with us through paid summer training programs sponsored by the American Academy of Neurology and American Geriatrics Society, respectively.

Past students have worked on various research projects, including those examining the psychological impact of risk assessment for Alzheimer’s disease, recruitment issues in clinical trials for AD, and physicians’ knowledge and attitudes toward genetic testing. In some cases, students have been able to use their experience to gain authorship on papers submitted for publication. Students have also had the opportunity to join attending physicians on Neurology rounds and to attend regularly scheduled research seminars and diagnostic case conferences at the ADC.

Application Deadline

The 2008 application deadline for the Boston University Medical Student Summer Research program is March 23, 2009.  Boston University medical students interested in unfunded research opportunities at the Alzheimer’s Disease Center may forward a cover letter and a current CV or resume to Nicole Cantwell at nicole27@bu.edu.  Please specify in the subject heading of your email that your inquiry pertains to the “Medical Student Summer Research Program.”  If you have general inquiries about this program, please visit the BUMC Office of Enrichment website.
