Job Description
This volunteer clinical research externship is intended for an undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled in an academic program in psychology/neuropsychology, neuroscience, epidemiology, medicine, or health science-related field. The position has flexible hours and is part-time (between 8-20 hours per week). A six month minimum commitment is required.
Scope of Position
Extern responsibilities may include coding data, scoring and interpreting neuropsychological tests, data management and entry (utilizing SPSS, SAS, Excel, or Access software), Internal Review Board procedures, preparation of federal (National Institutes of Health) and foundation grants, literature searching, and collection and summary of research articles. The extern will also have the opportunity to participate in weekly diagnostic meetings, educational lectures, and relevant research meetings.
For those highly motivated students who wish to gain more research experience, co-authoring of abstracts for presentation is available. Co-authoring of manuscripts is also encouraged for advanced students who demonstrate independence and mastery of the material under investigation.
During the externship, it is expected that the applicant will gain experience in clinical research procedures. The applicant will also gain knowledge in the fields of Alzheimer’s disease, neuropsychology, neurology, geriatrics, and neuroscience.
Applicant Requirements
Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills:
- Great attention to detail
- Superb oral and written communication skills
- Current enrollment in or recent completion of an undergraduate or graduate program with emphasis in psychology, neuroscience, or health services research
- Prior clinical research experience is not required but preferred
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team
- Ability and willingness to quickly learn new research and administrative skills
