Job Description
This volunteer neuropsychology externship is intended for an undergraduate student or graduate student currently enrolled in a science or health care-related program (e.g., psychology/neuropsychology, neuroscience) or a medical student. The position has flexible hours and is part-time (between 8-20 hours per week). A six-month minimum commitment is typically required, however, highly qualified applicants may be accepted on a full-time basis for the summer term (e.g. May - August).
Scope of Position
Extern responsibilities may include summarizing and converting of neuropsychological data, copying and filing neuropsychological materials, and assisting with medical record requests. Opportunities may also be available to administer and score both brief and comprehensive neuropsychological tests (e.g., Boston Naming Test, Hooper Visual Organization Test, Trail Making Test Parts A & B, CERAD Word List Learning, Dementia Rating Scale) to research participants with and without cognitive impairment. The extern will have the opportunity to participate in weekly diagnostic meetings, educational lectures, and neuropsychology research meetings.
During the externship, it is expected that the extern will gain experience in clinical research procedures, neuropsychological test administration and scoring, and clinical exposure to a geriatric cohort with and without cognitive impairment. The applicant will also gain knowledge in the fields of Alzheimer’s disease, neuropsychology, neurology, geriatrics, and neuroscience.
Applicant Requirements
Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills:
- Great attention to detail
- Superb communication skills
- Current enrollment in or recent completion of an undergraduate or graduate program with emphasis in psychology, epidemiology, neuroscience, or health services research
- Prior clinical research experience, though geriatric experience is not required
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team
- Ability and willingness to quickly learn new research and administrative skills
