Overview
Clinical research neuropsychology fellowships are available at the Boston University Alzheimer’s Disease Clinical & Research Program (ADCRP) in the Department of Neurology. The fellowship program, lasting two years, is designed to provide advanced clinical and research training in aging and neurodegenerative disorders. Two positions are generally available. The first position is primarily research oriented (75%), with modest outpatient clinical responsibilities (25%) in geriatric neuropsychology, and the second position consists primarily of clinical activities in geriatric neuropsychology (75%) with opportunity for research development (25%).
Fellows will be part of the Clinical Core of the NIA-funded BU-ADC, where research and clinical mentorship is supported through a dynamic and highly collaborative unit of over 30 faculty and staff members. Through a formal training program based in a multi-disciplinary outpatient memory clinic, fellows will further develop their clinical expertise in the neuropsychological assessment, conceptualization, and intervention of aging individuals and dementia.
Fellows will be expected to develop and carry out independent research studies including data collection, analysis, authoring of manuscripts, and grant development.
Active research areas include, but are not limited to:
- prospective studies related to functional changes associated with dementia (e.g., driving and dementia, an NIA-funded study of instrumental functional changes in mild cognitive impairment);
- retrospective studies examining risk factors for cognitive decline and dementia (e.g., cardiovascular health, subclinical thyroid disease, ApoE status);
- test development and validation (e.g., the Neuropsychological Assessment Battery, NAB); and
- retrospective studies based on the existing databases affiliated with the NIA-funded BU Alzheimer’s Disease Core Center.
Robust didactics are provided to augment the fellows’ clinical and research training, including participation in Neurology Grand Rounds, case conferences, ADC Seminar Series, and grant writing workshops. Additional didactics are available through the BU Behavioral Neurosciences program, the Clinical Neuroscience Society and Geriatrics Section (e.g., Geriatric Education Conferences).
Stipends are competitive and commensurate with NIH fellowship guidelines.
Anticipated start dates fall between July 1, 2009 and September 1, 2009. These positions are not part of the national APPCN matching program.
