Alzheimer's Disease Clinical & Research Program

Boston University Medical Center, Boston, MA

Overview of Services

The Alzheimer’s Disease Clinical & Research Program (ADCRP) clinic provides compassionate care for older adults with memory and other cognitive problems from a multidisciplinary team of experienced and knowledgeable professionals.  Each patient undergoes a comprehensive evaluation, including neuropsychological assessment (such as memory tests), neurological examination, extensive interviews with the patient and family members, and related diagnostic tests (for example, brain imaging and blood work).  In most circumstances, all aspects of the evaluation are conducted on the same day, with an additional appointment 1-2 weeks later to review the results of the evaluation and treatment recommendations with the patient and their family member(s).  Care is coordinated with patients’ primary care physicians and their other health care providers.

In addition to evaluation of memory and cognitive problems, the ADCRP clinic provides medical treatment and follow-up care for Alzheimer’s disease, frontal dementias, Lewy body disease and other dementias.  The ADCRP clinic provides important assistance to patients and their families for long-term care planning, caregiver support, and education.  Our clinicians facilitate referrals for community resources, such as adult day programs.  An additional service provided by the ADCRP clinic is assessment of the cognitive skills necessary for safe driving along with consultation and support for the patient and caregivers about the often difficult decision to stop driving.

These clinical services are affiliated with the research arm of the Alzheimer’s Disease Clinical & Research Program, which carries out many clinical trials in Alzheimer’s disease.  These trials provide interested patients with the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge Alzheimer’s research.
