As with many other health problems, Alzheimer’s disease affects ethnic minority groups at higher than average rates. These “health disparities” occur not only in regard to the number of people who are impacted by AD, but also the ways in which they are affected. For example, research has suggested that ethnic minorities with memory loss often receive less formal treatment than their White counterparts, and later in the disease course. In addition, ethnic minority groups are often underrepresented in research on the disease, both as investigators and study participants.

Fortunately, there are many initiatives underway nationwide to help address these problems. The BU ADC has a particular focus on African American issues in AD, with several programs pertaining to service, education, clinical care, and research.
