Genetics

Overview

The BU ADC provides live transgenic Alzheimer’s disease type mice for researchers.  Additionally, the Translational Animal Core provides brain samples and other tissue to researchers to suit their specific needs (formalin fixed, frozen, whole brain, cortex, hippocampus, etc.).

The overall goals of the BU ADC Translational Animal Core are to maintain and distribute well-characterized mouse models of AD and related neurodegenerative disorders for use by BU ADC affiliated researchers, associated researchers, and the research community at large. Our general plan of work is described in the following specific aims:

  • To breed, characterize, and maintain a selective stock of mutant transgenic Alzheimer’s disease mouse colonies and littermate control mice for the purpose of experimental and translational research that include:
    • amyloid precursor protein (APP) mice
    • presenilin-1 and APP double transgenic mice (PS-1/APP)
    • PS-1/APP/tau triple transgenic mice

  • To provide detailed behavioral and neurohistopathological examination of these mice required by investigators. In addition, we will maintain a database of information on available animal models and their potential use to researchers in their studies, as well as other technical and procedural support as needed by investigators.

  • To distribute experimental mouse models of AD, animal tissue specimens in order to facilitate the accomplishment of the scientific aims of BU ADC and associated researchers, pilot studies, and other NIA funded investigators focused on AD or other age related neurodegenerative disorders.

The BU ADC also offers its assistance in designing animal studies, providing training in relevant techniques (memory tests, genotyping, etc.) and data analysis.  In doing so, we hope to contribute to Alzheimer’s disease research in a collaborative setting, such as in therapeutic trials and crossing experiments.

Translational Animal Data Requests

If you are interested in obtaining data from the BU ADC Translational Animal Core, please download the letter detailing application instructions as well as the Animal Request Form.  Please read the instructions carefully, complete and submit the request form, along with supporting documentation, directly to the ADC Administrator, Ms. Beverly Young at bmyoung@bu.edu.
