Producing citizens trained in the arts of both peace and war was the goal of education in ancient Athens. This tradition of scholarship and learning has been cultivated and expanded through the years to broaden and enhance the minds of civilizations the world over. In present day Athens, the President of the American College of Greece, John S. Bailey (SMG '51), has long been devoted to the advancement and quality of higher learning. Bailey, a devoted international educator, completed his undergraduate education at the School of Management at Boston University. It is also here, in Boston, that Dr. Bailey went on to receive his MBA from Northeastern University and to begin his tenure as an administrator in higher education as the assistant to the President of Northeastern.

Since his days in Boston, Dr. Bailey has touched the lives of generations of students. At the American College of Greece where Dr. Bailey has been president for 30 years, he has helped guide the educational experience of some 30,000 individuals . Founded in Smyrna, Asia Minor, in 1875 as an all girls primary and secondary school, the American College of Greece expanded into higher education in 1885 and moved to Athens in 1923. From its humble beginnings in Smyrna to its current home in Athens, the prestigious College today boasts five divisions, 8,000 current students, 20,000 alumni and a deep respect for civic and community advancement. Much of this due to Dr. Bailey's expertise and determination to make sure the College is recognized worldwide as a leader.

Much like the College that he leads, Dr. Bailey has demonstrated a devotion to education and community. Working his way through Massachusetts, Maine, and finally Athens, Greece, Dr. Bailey has served as a member, officer, director, and trustee of numerous cultural, business, educational, civic and military organizations including Attica Tradition Educational Foundation, Association Of American International Colleges And Universities (AAICU) and Northerstern University, among others. His activity within the realm of education indicates a willingness to give back and a responsibility to promote success. These traits are those of not only a satisfied scholar, but also a dependable leader. The gift of time, skills and nurturing is an indication that Dr. Bailey's command at the College is well-balanced and passionate. In researching these schools, Dr. Bailey has and will continue to impact education worldwide.
