Associate Provost Douglas Sears, who served as the Superintendent of Chelsea Schools, will provide a brief history of the initiative. Then, Hardin Coleman, Dean of the School of Education, will lead a discussion that will include BU Overseer Bob Hildreth, who grew up in Chelsea, and Mary Bourque (SED’99, ’08), the current Superintendent of Chelsea Schools (and alumna of that school system).

Professor Jonathon Simon, Director of the Center for International Health & Development (CIHD) at the BU School of Public Health, a University-wide applied research center, will present some recent work on approaches to improving community-based management of childhood pneumonia. Pneumonia kills millions of children a year in low-resource countries, and the scientists at CIHD undertook research that showed a low-cost community-based approach using oral antibiotics could save millions of lives a year.
