Suzanne Challinor (CAS’70) of New Canaan, Ct., an artist and art educator, exhibited her oil paintings in the show Suzanne Challinor: Can’t Help but Gaze — Can’t Help but Paint this past fall at the WPA Gallery, Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, in Cross River, N.Y.

Barbara Filo (GRS’70,’82) of Arlington, Mass., exhibited her photographs in Nature’s Dreams, a solo show at the Lincoln Public Library in Lincoln, Mass.

Warren P. Russo (COM’71) of Newburyport, Mass., a Navy reservist, was deployed to Iraq in November for a one-year mobilization. A former advertising and marketing executive, he served in Kosovo in 1999 and in the global war on terrorism from 2002 to 2003. He is a program manager at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Mass. Harriet Winer (CAS’71) of New York, N.Y., is vice president of development at American Associates of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, a 36-year-old organization supporting the Israeli school.

Marsha O’Connell Heinz (ENG’72) of Burlington, Mass., is a chief scientist in the space control sensors division at Hanscom Air Force Base. After graduating from BU, she earned an M.S. in aerospace engineering at MIT. “On a personal note,” she writes, “I have two children enrolled at BU pursuing careers in the medical field.”

Karen (Knitwear) Morris (CAS’72) of Belmont, Mass., published The Beading Answer Book (Storey Publishing, 2008), which grew out of her experiences working and teaching at a bead store and learning everything she could about beads and beading techniques. Karen, a former associate editor at Threads magazine, also wrote Sewing Lingerie That Fits: Stylish Underwear, Sleepwear and Loungewear for Everyday Living (Taunton Press, 2001). Carol Gordon Ekster (SED’73,’78) of Andover, Mass., an elementary school teacher for 34 years, published her first children’s book. Where Am I Sleeping Tonight? Carolyn Jacoby Gabbay (CAS’73, LAW’76) of Newton, Mass., a lawyer with the Boston office of Nixon Peabody, was recognized in the 2008 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business in the area of health-care law.

Raymond L. McDonald (CAS’73) of Santa Barbara, Calif., is executive director of the Workforce Investment Board of Santa Barbara County. He also serves on the board of directors of the California Workforce Association and on the statewide Labor Market Information Advisory Group.

L. A. Meyer (CFA’73) of Corea, Maine, published My Bonny Light Horseman (Harcourt Children’s Books, 2008), the latest young adult novel in his Bloody Jack Adventure Series about a female pirate, Jacky Faber. The next, Rapture of the Deep, is due out in September 2009.

Sajed Kamal (SED’74) of Boston, Mass., received the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s New England division for his work promoting renewable energy education and projects since the early 1970s. Sajed, who teaches a course on renewable energy and sustainable development at Brandeis University, has consulted on solar projects in Bangladesh, El Salvador, and Armenia, as well as in the Fenway, his longtime neighborhood.

Richard Karelitz (LAW’74,’77) of Sharon, Mass., is chairman of Caritas Norwood Hospital’s Board of Trustees. Richard is general counsel to the Kraft Group, advising organizations such as the New England Patriots. He has served on the hospital’s board since 2002.

Jim Powers (COM’74) of Rowley, Mass., a partner at Fil-Tek Filtration Technology, Inc., moonlights as a background extra in movies shot in the Boston area. “Gigs include a funeral attendee in Matthew McConaughey’s The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, a restaurant patron in Ricky Gervais’ This Side of the Truth, and a bar patron in Kevin James’s Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” he writes. “I’m also on the short list for Mel Gibson’s upcoming Edge of Darkness. Aileen Katcher (MET’75) of Nashville, Tenn., was inducted into the YWCA Academy for Women of Achievement at a dinner sponsored by the YWCA of Nashville and Middle Tennessee in October. Aileen, a founding partner at Katcher Vaughn & Bailey Public Relations, was honored for leadership in her field and service to the community.

Charles “Chip” Babcock (LAW’76) of Houston, Tex., a partner in the Houston office of the law firm Jackson Walker, was named a top lawyer by H Texas magazine. The list names the top 2 percent of lawyers voted the best in the Houston area by both peers and readers.

Linda Fetters (SAR’76) of Santa Monica, Calif., received the 2008 Catherine Worthingham Fellow Award from the American Physical Therapy Association last June. Linda, a professor in the department of biokinesiology and physical therapy and the department of pediatrics at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine, was honored for her contributions to the science, education, and practice of physical therapy.

Mark Lane (CAS’76, GRS’79) of Ormond Beach, Fla., is the metro columnist for the Daytona Beach News-Journal. A book of his columns, Sandspurs: Notes from a Coastal Columnist (University Press of Florida, 2008), was published in September as part of the Florida History and Culture Series. “The pieces range from state politics, dashboard sociology, local color, and Nascar commentary to Darwinian gardening advice and explorations of the Great Florida Myth,” he writes. Steve Steinberg (SED’76) of Danvers, Mass., is a national director of Jones Lang LaSalle, Inc., a financial and professional services firm specializing in real estate. Steve directs the firm’s branding programs, corporate marketing, and public relations divisions.

Sandra Tedlock (CAS’76) of Tucson, Ariz., was named to Law and Politics’ 2008 list of Southwest Super Lawyers in the family law category. Sandra has run her own firm since 1992.

Jon Imber (CFA’77) of Somerville, Mass., was featured in the summer group exhibition Loners & Mavericks at the Nielsen Gallery on Newbury Street in Boston.

Ellen Davis Sullivan (LAW’77) of Andover, Mass., won third place for her short story “Yiddish Land” in a contest sponsored by the Karma Foundation and Moment, the world’s largest independent Jewish magazine. The piece was published in the November/December issue of Moment and honored at a reception in New York in December.

Judy Carlough (COM’78) of Londonderry, N.H., published her first book and audio recording, Building the Champion Mindset (2008), which uses techniques from world-class athletes and coaches to help people overcome the mental blocks that hold them back. David Reed (GRS’78) of Unionville, Ontario, recently published In Jesus’ Name: The History and Beliefs of Oneness Pentecostals (Deo Publishing, 2007), a study of the origins, history, and theology of the third stream of Pentecostalism that emerged during the Pentecostal Revival. David recently spent five weeks in five Asian countries researching a book on the True Jesus Church, the largest independent church founded in China in the 20th century. David, a professor emeritus and a research professor at Wycliffe College, teaches part-time and writes.
