Renato Freitas (MET’00) of Brasilia, Brazil, is CEO of Global Agricultural Biodiesel, a U.S.-based investment group. “I am based in Brasilia, the capital,” Renato writes, “but I travel quite often to attend meetings around the country and abroad.”

Nicole Peeler (CAS’00) of Shreveport, La., has worked out a book deal with Orbit Books for three books. The first volume of the urban fantasy series, Tempest Rising, will be published later this year. Nicole is an assistant professor of English literature at Louisiana State University.

Thomas Spilker (SMG’00) of Hoboken, N.J., married Meredith Gordon on in Park Ridge, N.J., on October 25, 2008. Ethan Wickman (CFA’00) of Eau Claire, Wis., is an assistant professor of music composition and theory at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire. His 2004 work Solitary Deserts of Infinite Space: An Airborne Overture for Orchestra had its East Coast premiere this past November by the Newton Symphony Orchestra.

Raemi Woods (CAS’02) of Brighton, Mass., was named cochair of the Arts, Entertainment, and Sports Law Committee of the Boston Bar Association’s intellectual property law section. Raemi works in the intellectual property, rights, and permissions department at Pearson Education, Inc.

Brian C. Alston (STH’03) of Honolulu, Hawaii, recently visited Haiti as part of a humanitarian team bearing medicine and medical supplies from the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation of Randolph, Mass. “Even with 70 percent unemployment and 20 percent of children dying before age five, the Haitian people remain resilient, self-determined, and committed to dignity,” he writes. “My visit was life-altering.”

Rhiannon Varmette (COM’03) is a Fulbright scholar teaching English in Madrid, Spain. Her research will be on immigration in the education system. Rhiannon earned a master’s degree in education from Brooklyn College and had been teaching in Brooklyn, N.Y., before being awarded the Fulbright.

Simone Aponte (COM’04) of San Diego, Calif., won a regional Emmy Award for the Pacific Southwest in the category of spot breaking news coverage. As a news producer at the CBS affiliate KFMB-TV, she was part of the team that covered the 2007 San Diego wildfires.

Gail Cayetano (CGS’02, COM’04) and Stephanie Hansen (COM’05) of Venice, Calif., are managing partners of Starfish Creative Events, an events management firm catering to corporate and entertainment clients looking to promote their brands with events. Nashira Baril (SPH’06) of Dorchester, Mass., is director of the Boston Public Health Commission’s REACH, a federally funded program that seeks to eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities. Last year, she led the city’s effort to secure $4 million in funding by becoming federally designated a Center of Excellence in the Elimination of Health Disparities.
