Matthew Garrett (CFA’00) of Spartanburg, S.C., is an assistant professor of choral music education at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned a Ph.D. in choral music education and conducting from Florida State University. Matthew was invited to be a conducting participant at the Oregon Bach Festival, under the direction of Helmuth Rilling, in June 2009.

Diana Rodriguez Wallach (COM’00) of Philadelphia, Pa., won second place in the 11th Annual International Latino Book Awards for Best Young Adult Fiction–English for her debut novel, Amor and Summer Secrets (Kensington, 2008). Peter Campion (GRS’01) of Auburn, Ala., was awarded a Rome Prize in Literature from the trustees of the American Academy in Rome. Awardees are provided with a stipend, a study or studio, and room and board for six months to two years; they live at the academy’s 11-acre center in Rome. Peter is a poet and an assistant professor at Auburn University.

Rebeka Fergusson-Lutz (CAS’01) of Doha, Qatar, completed a dual master’s program at American University. She now has an M.A. in teaching secondary English and a M.A. in international peace and conflict resolution. She teaches high school English at the American School of Doha.

Thomas M. Landy (GRS’01) of Dedham, Mass., is the director of the Center for Religion, Ethics, and Culture at the College of the Holy Cross. Previously, Thomas was associate director of the center and was named interim director last summer.

Elizabeth Ziemba (SPH’01) of Brookline, Mass., published her first book, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Giving Back (Penguin Publishing, 2009). The book calls on Elizabeth’s experience as an attorney and director of the nonprofit Brookline-based organization SHARED. A portion of the book’s proceeds will be donated to SHARED. Justin Aclin (CAS’02) of Goshen, N.Y., and his wife, Brooke, announce the birth of their second child, Naomi Charlotte, on April 17, 2009.

Susanne Matias (CAS’02, MED’04) of St. Petersburg, Fla., graduated from Midwestern University’s Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in June 2009. Hiko Mitsuzuka (COM’02) of Los Angeles, Calif., produced the short film Bitch, which was screened at the 2009 British Film Festival, Outfest, and Philadelphia’s QFest. The short film was directed by Michael Medico (CFA’94), who also worked with Hiko on the PSA series Stealing Sucks for the American Association of Independent Music. Hiko has worked for three years with the production company Anonymous Content and is the managing editor of HotterInHollywood.com.

Matthew Glenn (CAS’03) of Jamaica Plain, Mass., a former captain of the Terrier sailing team, is captain of the schooner A. J. Meerwald in Bivalve, N.J. The restored Delaware Bay oyster boat provides science- and maritime-based experimental education programs in the Delaware, Chesapeake, and New York harbors. Amanda Ma (SMG’03) of Arcadia, Calif., is cofounder of Fresh Events Company, an award-winning event design and production company based in Los Angeles. Fresh Events was voted the 2008 best wedding planner in Los Angeles on myFOXla. Clay Pandorf (SAR’03) of Newport Beach, Calif., received the 2009 National Space Biomedical Research Institute Gravitational Physiology Award for Beginning Investigators. The award, presented each year at the American Physiological Society, Environmental and Exercise Physiology Section, Awards and Business Meeting, recognizes the best abstract submitted in the postdoctoral category. Clay, who has a master’s in physiology from BU, completed his doctoral degree in biological sciences in 2008 at the University of California at Irvine.

Michael Shepsis (SMG’03) of New York, N.Y., was awarded a law degree from Northeastern University in May 2009. While at Northeastern, Michael worked at Calyon-Credit Agricole, a global investment bank, the Massachusetts Superior Court, and Rubin Rudman LLP as part of the school’s cooperative legal education program.

Michelle Wassenaar (CAS’03) and Ian Menzies (ENG’03) of Brighton, Mass., were married in Oak Lawn, Ill., on March 7, 2009. Elizabeth (Mahon) Brown (CAS’02), John G. Manna (CAS’02), and Rebecca Taylor (MET’05) were in the wedding party. Also in attendance were Patrick Sexton (ENG’04,’07), Melissa (Kent) Krueger (COM’97), Caitlin Conway (SED’06), Samuel Kurnit (CAS’06), and Alex Macnow (CAS’08).

Jeremy Yaches (COM’03) of Brooklyn, N.Y., produced his first feature-length documentary, In a Dream. Set in South Philadelphia, the film centers on Isaiah Zagar, an eccentric artist, and his love for his wife, Julia. The documentary debuted at the Cinema Village in New York this past April. Courtney Hollands (COM’04) of Somerville, Mass., is the senior producer for the “Things to Do” section on boston.com, which won a 2009 Editor & Publisher EPpy award for best entertainment Web site. Sara Katz (CFA’04) of New York, N.Y., is producer of the theatrical rock concert Things to Ruin: The Songs of Joe Iconis, which was performed at the Second Stage Theatre in New York City this past May.

Ashley (Jung) Kim (SMG’04) and Abraham Kim (SMG’05) of Fort Lee, N.J., were married on May 30, 2009. Sam Kim (CAS’05), Kimberly Chan (CAS’04), Jillian Ng (SAR’04), Victoria Loo (CAS’05), Judy Kim (CAS’05), and Allison Jung (SAR’11), the bride’s sister, were in the wedding party. Abraham is an associate pastor at Metro Community Church in Englewood, N.J., and Ashley is an associate finance manager at Unilever and the associate director of the children’s program at Metro Community Church.

George M. Beck, Jr. (MET’07) of Palisades Park, N.J., published Palisades Park (Arcadia Publishing, 2009). The book includes more than 200 historic photographs of George’s hometown.

Barri Tsavaris (COM’07) of Bronx, N.Y., produced her first full-length play, I Will Follow,at the Actors’ Playhouse in August as part of the New York International Fringe Festival. The full-ensemble comedy chronicles the playwright’s semiautobiographical quest for truth, love, and religion through the music of U2. “I Will Follow explores the challenge of finding yourself when you’re already committed to following something else,” Barri writes. Blake Goodwin (CFA’08) of Boston, Mass., is a project manager at the custom mosaic design company Artaic. The company has been working with a number of other BU alums as well as students, including George Shaw (CFA’08), who developed software used to design the mosaics and control robotic production; Michael Deal (CFA’09), Colin Mahoney (CFA’09), and Jane Song (CFA’09), who worked on branding and marketing; and Christian Esten (CGS’08, COM’10), who is helping to develop the company’s promotional video.
