Richard Fontaine (MET’80) of Plympton, Mass., is vice president for technology and chief information officer at Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Susan Manchester (LAW’80) of Amherst, N.H., was recognized as best attorney in real estate law in New Hampshire by the organization Chambers USA. Susan has a commercial real estate and lending practice at Sheehan Phinney Bass and Green in Manchester, N.H.

Julia Shepley (CFA’80) of Brookline, Mass., showed her sculpture in the solo exhibition Fluid States last fall at the Boston Sculptors Gallery. Julia’s sculpture, drawings, and prints have been exhibited in shows in Massachusetts, New York, Maine, and Johannesburg, South Africa. She works out of her studio in Brickbottom Artist Studios in Somerville.

Richard J. Albano (CAS’81) of Medway, Mass., was promoted to senior scientist at Daylor Consulting Group, Inc., a Boston-area engineering and planning firm. Richard is a wetland scientist and ecologist with more than 20 years of experience in assessing and monitoring wetland regulatory strategies, plant and animal communities, rare and endangered species, and wildlife habitats.

Richard Belin (LAW’81) and Bill Parker (SED’93), both of Cambridge, Mass., created Hindsight Media, a private film company that produces biographical documentaries for families, individuals, and organizations. Lee Gartenberg (LAW’81) of Framingham, Mass., is chair of the Massachusetts Bar Association’s criminal justice section. He has been the director of inmate legal services for the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office since 1982.

Linda (Corwin) Palmer (LAW’82) of Milton, Mass., is director of corporate compliance at Network Health, a comprehensive health plan serving low- and moderate-income residents of Massachusetts. Linda will oversee Network Health’s compliance with federal and state laws and contract requirements.

Richard W. Rodgers (SED’82) of Saint Paul, Minn., received two distinctions in his field: he was named a diplomate in clinical psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology and a fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Psychology. Michelle Tortolani (ENG’82,’89) of Alexandria, Va., was installed as the 45th president of the Society of Women Engineers at a ceremony in Bethesda, Md., last August. Michelle is the senior director of repeater engineering and operations at XM Satellite Radio in Washington, D.C.

Mary E. Mitchell (SED’83) of West Newton, Mass., published her debut novel, Starting Out Sideways (St. Martin’s Press, 2007). She credits the late BU creative writing professor and novelist George V. Higgins with encouraging her to pursue her goal and writes, “Boston University is inextricably tied up in the story of my bumpy road to success ¾ culminating in a two-book contract with Thomas Dunne Books at St. Martin’s Press ¾ as a published novelist.”

Mary Donovan Moeller (STH’83) of Dunstable, Mass., published Generation Dances: A Caregiver’s Journey (PublishAmerica, 2006), which tells the story of how she and her husband cared for five dying family elders in their home. E-mail her at marymoeller@charter.net.

David M. Fitzgerald (MET’84) of Harrisburg, Pa., received his third Navy Legion of Merit award last June for leadership and service in Singapore after the 2004 tsunami. At the award ceremony, Navy Rear Admiral Alan Thompson said, “Captain Fitzgerald did a remarkable job in ensuring the delivery of food, water, comfort items, and medical supplies to tsunami victims in the aftermath of the 2004 disaster.” David is the deputy commander of Navy Family Support.

Eric Hernandez (ENG’84) of Topeka, Kans., writes that after working for General Motors and Innovia Films, he has settled down with a job at Goodyear, where he is responsible for the maintenance of about 40 percent of the plant. “I can now say that I am truly happy to be back in the automotive business,” he writes. “Alcira and the boys have settled well into their routines.”

Jeffrey Katz (CAS’84) of Fairfax, Va., is the volunteer liaison for the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. Previously, he was deputy director of the New York City Department of Design and Construction. “After 22 years of performing environmental and geotechnical services for New York City, it is time for a change,” he writes.

Stuart Meltzer (CAS’84) of Long Beach, N.Y., ran a hard-fought but ultimately unsuccessful campaign for family court judge in Nassau County in November’s election. He campaigned as an independent. He writes, “Regards to all of my fellow alumni from Park Drive and Buswell Street, 1983-1984: Patti, Mark, Ron, Bambi, Steve, and all.”

Dennis Springhetti (MET’84) of Baghdad, Iraq, is in his second year as a facility manager for the U.S. State Department. He earned a Master of Science in Business Administration at BU.

Juan Diaz Colocho (ENG’85) of San Salvador, El Salvador, was recently elected to the board of the American Chamber of Commerce of El Salvador, where he is chairman of the trade and investment committee. “I have recently traveled throughout Japan, China, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, and Dallas, where I have met with lots of BU alumni,” he writes. “I would love to hear from all former classmates as well as from friends of the international community.” E-mail him at juandiaz@alum.bu.edu.

Randy Sue (Kornfeld) Marber (LAW’85) of Jericho, N.Y., was elected a Supreme Court justice for the 10th Judicial District in New York on November 7, 2006. She assumed office in January 2007. Randy Sue was a district court judge in Nassau County from 2002 to 2006.

Gregg Thaller (CFA’85) of McPherson, Kans., is director of bands and an associate professor of music at McPherson College.

David Bogen (GRS’86,’91) of South Dartmouth, Mass., was appointed associate provost for academic affairs at Rhode Island School of Design. Previously, he was an assistant professor of sociology at Emerson College.

Tarra Lyons (CFA’86) of Oakland, Calif., and David Miles are proud to announce the birth of twins, Pearson Quinn Miles and Fiona Maxine Miles, on January 12, 2007, in San Francisco.

Ana C. Ortiz-Montijo (GRS’86,’88) of Boston, Mass., was honored for her commitment and dedication to the community at the International Women’s Day Celebration last March at Boston City Hall. Ana is the program director for the Home for Little Wanderers’ Child and Family Counseling Center in Roslindale, Mass.

Sonia (Beals) Schonning (COM’86) of Windermere, Fla., is vice president of child development for the Central Florida YMCA. Sonia oversees family centers for children of cast members at the Walt Disney World Resort. She would love to hear from classmates at soni2@charter.net.

Lilliam Martinez Bustos (COM’87) of Miami, Fla., is an associate professor of journalism and broadcasting at Florida International University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Previously, she was a producer for NBC Telemundo’s Washington bureau and a senior producer for CBS TeleNoticias.

Edward Cook (ENG’87) of Baghdad, Iraq, works in the Health Attache Office of the American Embassy in Baghdad. “My focus is building the capacity of the ministry of health’s ability to deliver services to Iraq,” he writes. He focuses on getting Iraqi doctors to return to work at clinics and hospitals, building the emergency medical systems, and helping Iraq develop a comprehensive health-care strategy.

Jeanette Ives Erickson (SON’87) of Charlestown, Mass., was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in a ceremony in Washington, D.C., last November. Jeanette is senior vice president for patient care services at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Gani Manelli (CAS’87) of Waterbury, Conn., teaches history and social studies at Masuk High School in Monroe, Conn. He is also a strength and conditioning coach at Chase Collegiate School in Waterbury and an adjunct history professor at both Sacred Heart University and Housatonic Community College.

Colbert (SED’88) of Fitchburg, Mass., was elected to the executive board of the Association for Childhood Education International, a professional organization that promotes the rights, education, and well-being of children. Ronald, a professor of education at Fitchburg State College, will serve a three-year term as vice president, representing intermediate and middle childhood.

Louis B. Goldman (SMG’88) of Newton Center, Mass., was named to the corporate divisions group at the newly formed Charrette division of the Pitman Company in Woburn. Louis was also elected to a three-year term on the board of trustees, as well as a one-year term as secretary of electronic media, at Temple Ohabei Shalom in Brookline. David is the news copy desk chief and stylebook editor at the San Francisco Chronicle, where he has worked since November 1996.

Lissy Friedman (CAS’89) of Boston, Mass., is a senior staff attorney at the Tobacco Control Resource Center (TCRC), a division of the Public Health Advocacy Institute in Boston. TCRC’s mission is to study and encourage antitobacco litigation and regulation. Lissy has spoken at conferences and on National Public Radio and has published several scholarly articles, one of which was recently cited in an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court.
