Campaign Update

November 21, 2004

A preview open house of the Florence & Chafetz Hillel House was held on November 21, 2004. With construction nearing completion, over 250 members of the BU Hillel Family – students, alumni, donors, and parents – gathered for their first tour of the new building. Named for benefactors Leonard Florence (SMG’54, Hon. ’01) and Irwin Chafetz (CAS’58, Hon. ’04), the facility will feature four floors of study space, meeting areas for large and small groups, and three chapels. It boasts features such as wireless internet access, a coffee bar, display cooking kitchens, an art gallery and a 250-seat dining room. BU Hillel Board president Aaron Kaplowitz (COM’06) and BU Students for Israel chair Chloe Markowitz (CAS’06) presented a framed mezuzah to the Florence and Chafetz families. Irwin Chafetz spoke warmly of his friend and fellow naming donor, Leonard Florence, who was unable to attend the event.
