I Give Because...

Kristen Barbarics, CAS'98

"As an alumna of Boston University, I am proud to support my alma mater. Making an annual fund gift every year is an opportunity for me to express my appreciation for the wonderful education I received, a considerable portion of which was funded by financial aid. I also consider my gift to be a statement of support for the University's work. I believe that alumni play an important role in ensuring Boston University continues to thrive and is able to provide meaningful learning experiences for future alumni."

Abdul Rasul Damji, ENG'85,90

“I’ve been very impressed with the College’s growth and innovation which are critical for the betterment of both the future generations and the world,” he said in a recent conversation. “I am glad to see the strong relationship between pioneering research done at the University level and the use of it throughout the world.”

“Higher Education is a medium where the knowledge flows from one generation to the next and that’s what humanity is all about — the transfer of education to future generations,” he said.

Julie Hochheiser, COM'2004

"I give to COM because I know how much money it takes to keep the education there updated. There is a lot of new communications technology coming out every day, and I want COM to be able to keep up with it. I know that they need financial help to do this. Also, I was very active in WTBU, BU's radio station. We always needed more money, and I think alumni funds can help keep the radio station going.

For me, it's important to give back to BU and COM because it gave so much to me. I gained professional experience that helped me get where I am today. Also, BU is where I met some of my best friends and many people who have inspired me so much in life. I feel lucky and thankful to have these people in my life and I want to give back whatever I can. I also want future generations to have these same experiences, so I want BU to thrive."

Laura Litcofsky, SED'91

"Dean Dewey and Dean Dee have watched me grow from a shy student who attended BU with the help of scholarship funds, to a member of the SED Student Council, then a proud graduate who went on to teach pre-kindergarten in the Chelsea Public Schools, where I now help implement math curricula as a Lead Math Teacher," says Laura Litcofsky ('91).

"Every change has been an adventure, and each has brought renewed gratitude for the opportunities I was given at BU. The lessons I learned at SED serve me every day in my classroom in Chelsea.  Student teaching in the Early Childhood Learning Lab honed my practical skills, and taught me to be conscious of everything I say and do (a useful lesson both in and out of the classroom!).  I am also a member of the SED Alumni Board.  That membership is very special to me, because the Board supports programs and services that directly benefit students.  The SED Fund does that, too.I support the SED Fund annually.  I hope you will join me."

Nikita McCalister, STH'2005

"I give to BU because of the considerable amount of help I received as a student. I give because I want to be a blessing for someone else just like the anonymous donors were for my family and me. Finally, I give because I believe that BU provides wonderful programs that prepares its students for various academic and professional careers.

In addition to the reasons listed in question number three, I feel that it is important to support the institution that continues to strive for excellence in scholarship and research. I strongly, believe that it is my responsibility to help the generations that follow me as they prepare to be the next voices of the future as scholars, theologians, pastors, teachers, and non-profit leaders among other career paths."

Michael Novak, SSW'97

I believe that the School has given me so much that I want to ensure that generations of future social workers have the resources they need and that the School can strive to fulfill its urban mission.

I think it is the responsibility of every alumnus to support and nurture the future of the profession. By doing so, we better prepare our future colleagues for the challenges that lie ahead in their professional lives.

Dennis Pipher, SDM'77

“BU afforded me the opportunity to achieve my dreams.  That’s the reason I want to give back—to provide students who are just starting out in the profession the same opportunities I had. I have to give the school credit for where I am today,”
“Most people can relate: it’s expensive to go to dental school. So I feel if I can help another student get the education I had, I will do that as best I can.”
