The Boston University School of Social Work continues to be recognized nationally for its comprehensive, innovative, and flexible master’s degree curriculum. The School’s eighty-eight- year history of social work training reflects a commitment to an urban mission based in the community.
The most recent U. S. News & World Report ranked BUSSW in the top ten of all private schools of social work nationwide and the School placed eighth in faculty publications rates in a report in the January 2007 Chronicle of Higher Education. These are accomplishments of which we are very proud! With tuition at the School reaching nearly $23,000, however, students find themselves with an average loan debt of $45,000 upon graduation. That debt creates a tough reality when the average annual salary for social workers in their first job is $35,000–40,000.
Nearly all BUSSW students receive financial aid, and two-thirds of them receive scholarships, but the average scholarship award is less than $8,000. Competing institutions often provide students twice as much scholarship money and the effects on the School are palpable. To remain competitive, BUSSW must succeed in fundraising efforts for student financial support and for top-quality educational training.
Donations to BUSSW are invaluable, offering the School opportunities to expand students’ experiences and continue to provide excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship. The support of alumni is the best tool for maintaining the School’s competitive edge and cultivating the next generation of social workers. We hope we can count on your continued and much- appreciated support.
A contribution to SSW will be recognized in the BUSSW Alumni Journal and on the SSW website. Please visit www.bu.edu/ssw/alumni for more information on giving and the Annual Fund Leadership Societies.
