COM Kicks off Entrepreneurial Competition
On Wednesday, October 17, COM officially kicked off the Harold G. Buchbinder Entrepreneurial Media Studies Competition. The year-long competition is open to first-year graduate students in COM and will give them an opportunity to create, research and develop a business plan supporting innovative products and services in the communication field. Winning presentations will be eligible to receive up to $10,000 in grant money.

California Laughin’
Last month, laughter echoed across Los Angeles as comedians and BU alumni Bruce Fine, Elon Gold, Jamie Kaler and Jeffrey Ross performed at Comedy in a Digital Age hosted by Jason Alexander, the first annual benefit event to support the Boston University Los Angeles Internship Program. Following up that event, BU in LA presents Comedy in the Digital Age—A Symposium. The event will begin with a screening of Res. Life, COM’s second student-produced comedy pilot, before a two-hour panel discussion about the impact of technology on creation, content, delivery, and democratization of comedy talent and information. Film and Television Department Recognized in Hollywood ReporterThe Department of Film and Television was recently recognized in the Hollywood Reporter as one of the top 12 programs in the country. The article, published on October 2, cites the BULA Internship Program and alumni networks as its greatest strengths. It also mentions the broad curriculum as an advantage enjoyed by film and television students.
Red Sox, COM Students Sweep
While the Boston Red Sox were taking out the brooms in Colorado, COM advertising students completed a sweep of their own in the student category at the 47th Annual Hatch Awards presented by the Ad Club. Brian Pope won a silver and bronze bowl, while Jason Johnson and George O’Connor won bronze bowls in the student category.
Reunion Weekend, Fall 2008
Beginning this year, reunion weekend will no longer take place during commencement. New plans are underway for a fall reunion weekend in 2008—a perfect time for alumni to return to campus and enjoy the New England autumn. Stay tuned for more information in December’s COMmunity Update.

An Inspirational Lecture with Dr. Bertrand Piccard
Swiss scientist and adventurer Dr. Bertrand Piccard will be speaking about his experience co-piloting a hot-air balloon that circumnavigated the globe in 19 days. Please join us for this inspirational lecture at the Boston University Photonics Center at 10 a.m. The lecture will conclude with a Swiss style reception provided by the Consulate of Switzerland. Cape Cod Holiday Pops: Home for the Holidays
Join the BU Alumni Club of Cape Cod & the Islands at the Cape Cod Symphony - Barnstable Performing Arts Center (744 West Main Street), for this special show touted as "...the ONLY way to start the season on the Cape!" Featuring soprano Megan Weston, the Chatham Chorale, the Extol Bell Choir, the Barnstable High School Gospel and Honors Choirs and Conductor Jung-Ho Pak. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. Entrée options include: Baked stuffed shrimp: Three jumbo shrimp with crabmeat stuffing or Chicken marsala: Breast of chicken sautéed with wild mushrooms and sundried tomatoes in a marsala sauce. Comedy in the Digital Age – A Symposium
Please join us for the next BU in LA special event, Comedy in the Digital Age—A Symposium. The symposium will take place at the Chaplin Theater in Hollywood and will feature a panel of comedy and technology executives discussing the impact of technology on the creation and content of comedy talent and a screening of Res Life, a sitcom pilot directed and produced by BU Film/Television students.
