Why Give?

Colleen Wheeler McCreary, COM ’95
Global Director of University Relations, Electronic Arts
Redwood City, California

Colleen Wheeler McCrearyAs Global Director of University Relations at Electronic Arts, Colleen Wheeler McCreary, COM'95, is responsible for recruiting employees from universities around the world. Globetrotting, she meets talented students and game enthusiasts every day; but what she looks for in an ideal candidate is someone with a spark — and someone who can write clearly, speak intelligently and think critically. These skills, which Colleen honed as a student at the College of Communication, have helped her throughout her career, and for that — and many other reasons — Colleen proudly supports her Alma Mater with an annual gift to the COM Fund.

What is your favorite memory from your time at COM?

When I think back to my time at BU, my fondest memories are of the relationships I built. Freshman year, I lived in Warren Towers on a specific COM floor, and I’m still in touch with a handful of people who lived there. Additionally, when comparing experiences with others about my collegiate experience, people are always surprised when I mention how small my classes were and the engaging discussions I had with many of my professors. I still think of Tobe Berkovitz and Jack Falla as being highly influential in my development as a writer and a person.

How did COM prepare you for your career?

Although I don't represent one of the traditional COM careers, the development of my writing and critical-thinking skills have been crucial in both graduate school and as my career has progressed. The abilities to think on my feet and assess situations quickly are also used on a daily basis.

Why did you become a member of the COM Leadership Giving Societies?

Although it took me about ten years to finally finish off all of my student loans from undergraduate and graduate school, I’ve always felt that one of the best ways to say “thank you” for an amazing four years of life-changing experiences was to give back. My employers also have believed in matching gifts so it's always been a two-for-one opportunity.

What about COM makes you proud to be an alumna?

I’m continually impressed at the number of my classmates who are really impacting the world in a variety of industries. Between those creating new forms of entertainment and those who are reporting on it, I know that my degree will continue to represent a standard of the highest quality.
