“Don’t Be That Guy (or Girl). The Idiot’s Guide to Landing a Job”
On April 11th, the COM Alumni Board and COM Career Services invited local industry leaders to share interviewing and networking tips with the Class of 2007 at “Don’t Be That Guy (or Girl). The Idiot’s Guide to Landing a Job.” Special thanks to those who helped COM students land (and ace) their first interviews:
Paul LaCamera, ’66. General Manager, WBUR-FM
Art Jahnke, ’78, Assistant Vice President/Executive Editor, BU Today
Cynthia McKeown, ’95, Documentary Filmmaker
Chris Cavalieri, ’81, Professor of Television, College of Communication
Mark Nardi, Senior Vice President/Associate Creative Director, Hill Holliday
Members of the Class of 2007 learned interviewing tips that transcend every discipline and others specific to their industry.
Mark Nardi and Chris Cavalieri reminded students that shined shoes, a firm handshake and eye contact are just as important as a stellar resume.
Art Jahnke, Cindy McKeown, and Mark Nardi shared their career histories - from entry to executive levels - and used their personal experiences to teach students how they, too, can succeed in these competitive fields.
Paul LaCamera has a storied career in television and broadcasting. While he inspired students with his work, he also encouraged them to take risks, try different jobs and take their time in determining their own career paths.
Budding filmmakers in Cindy McKeown’s breakout session heard about her award-winning documentary One in Eight: Janice’s Journey, which follows one woman’s fight with breast cancer and tackles larger issues surrounding the epidemic.
Budding creatives looking to make their mark in public relations and advertising had a lively break-out session and heard what to do.and what not to do.when interviewing for these coveted positions!
