Among the BU trustees on the presidential search committee who have been inspired by the Leventhal Challenge to contribute to the Fund for Leadership and Innovation is Richard Shipley (SMG’68, GSM’72). He and his wife, Karen Shipley, have donated $500,000 to the fund, and Leventhal will match their contribution. “It really was an easy decision to make,” says Shipley. “Karen and I wanted to support Alan because we thought he really stepped forward and we all want to help him bring in the best possible president to Boston University. It’s a good thing to communicate to a new president that we, as a board, are going to stand behind him or her. Budgets are always tight, whether you’re at a corporation or a university, so to create this expendable fund for projects important to the president is a great way to attract a new leader and stand behind him or her as well.”
