Despite the continued stock market slump and a tightened giving environment following September 11, Boston University's fundraising efforts brought in a record-setting $90.6 million during the 2002 fiscal year.

BU in the Family
Thanks to a $100,000 family donation, BU will dedicate a welcome desk in the Student Village fitness and recreation center in memory of the late Thomas Walsh, a BU Trustee and parent of two alumni.

BU alumnus, William Kleh (LAW'71), has established the BU Distinguished Lecture Series in London featuring prominent BU faculty. In October 2002, the speaker was Elie Wiesel, BU's Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities and recipient of the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize.
Fred Pardee (SMG'54, GSM'54) A Better Future
The scope of research possibilities at the Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future is wide, to say the least. Founded at Boston University in 2000 with funding from Frederick S. Pardee (SMG'54, GSM'54), the interdisciplinary center studies the future, primarily from thirty-five to 200 years out.

Will Nystrom (CAS'88) recently initiated the Boston Briefings Series, a program of small gatherings on campus where alumni get together and catch up on University news.

Young M.B.A.s Look to Their Future Giving
Three recent classes from the School of Management's Executive M.B.A. program have started a charitable-giving instrument to benefit BU as well as other charities.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Boston University are longtime partners. The foundation has awarded more than 100 grants totalling over $60 million to BU since 1972 for research and outreach in substance abuse prevention and health care policy.

With a gift of $2 million, the Karin Grunebaum Cancer Research Foundation has established the Grunebaum Professorship in Cancer Research at the School of Medicine. The Grunebaum Professorship will be awarded to a recognized scientist working in any MED department whose principal focus is on cancer research.

Publishing and Filmmaking couple, Hugo Shong (COM'87, GRS'90) and Luo Yan (CFA'90), have announced their support of BU scholarships. Yan has pledged $50,000 to the College of Fine Arts to endow the Luo Yan Scholarship Fund and Shong will give an additional $50,000 over the next five years to the Hugo Shong Scholarship Fund.
