BU Alumni App

What is the BU Alumni App?


BU’s alumni app takes your public profile information from LinkedIn and business information you’ve shared with BU, making a super-duper powerful networking tool. The app gives you the ability to connect with other alumni in your industry and location.

How do I download the BU Alumni App?


Search for “EverTrue” in the Apple App Store or in Google Play. Once you have downloaded the app and opened it, you will be asked to select “Boston University” and prompted to log in. Please log in with your first and last name, as well as your email address. If the email address matches what we have on file, you’ll receive an authentication message in your email inbox. Be sure to open the email you receive on the mobile device you used to download the app. Click “Verify” and you will have access to the app.

What if I do not receive a confirmation email when I try to log in?


If you do not receive a confirmation email, it may mean that we do not have an email address on file for you, or that we have a different one. If this is the case, please contact alumni@bu.edu to verify your email address and update your contact information.

Which devices support the app?


The BU Alumni app is currently available for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android devices. For iOS, we support the 5 and higher operating systems. For Android we support back to OS 2.3.

How do I search for people using the directory?


Type the name of the person you are seeking in the search box. If you are unsure of the spelling, you may type a few letters in the name, click “Search” and the app will pull a list of possible matches. You also have the option to search by class year by typing a year into the search box.

How do I search for people nearby?


Click on the “Alumni Nearby” tab in the sidebar navigation. A map will appear with pushpins indicating people in your area as you can see below. Clicking on one of the pushpins will open that individual’s listing in the directory. You may also click the icon in the top right corner of the map to view a list of people nearby. To search within the map feature, click on the search icon on the bottom of the map.

How do I connect using my LinkedIn or email account?

The app allows you to connect and network with other people using LinkedIn. This is recommended to maximize your networking ability. You can also connect using your email. When you first log in to the app, you will be asked if you would like to connect via LinkedIn or email. Choose either one. Once you are in the app, you can view business information that Terriers have included in their LinkedIn profiles along with the number of connections you have in common. Anything marked as private in LinkedIn remains private. If you are not connected to that individual, you will not see his/her private information, nor will he/she be able to view yours. Don’t forget to list “Boston University” in the education field in your LinkedIn profile, and join the Boston University Alumni LinkedIn Group! If you decide not to immediately connect your LinkedIn account, you may do so at anytime by going to “Settings” and clicking on “Manage Accounts”. Likewise, you may disconnect at any time.

How do I update my contact information?

Update your contact info here. BU will update the directory and contact you with any questions. You can also recommend other Terriers to “Update this Profile” in the event you know someone’s info is out of date. We appreciate these leads and will contact that individual inquiring about the update.

Alumni Online Community

What is the Alumni Online Community?


BU’s Alumni Online Community is your portal which  provides many ways for you to keep your social and professional connections with other alumni and Boston University strong. All degree recipients, and those that have been conferred with honorary membership status, are eligible for Alumni Online Community benefits including alumni events, the online alumni directory, and career services.

If you graduated in 2011 or later, no registration is required. You log in with your full email address (including the @bu.edu part) and Kerberos password.

If you graduated before 2011 and would like to join the Alumni Online Community but you do not remember your BU ID number, contact the alumni office at alumni@bu.edu. Our Alumni Online Community help desk will respond to your request during regular business hours at Boston University.

How much does the Alumni Online Community cost?


Nothing. The Alumni Online Community is a collection of complimentary services available to all BU degree recipients.

How do I register for the Alumni Online Community if I graduated before 2011?


You will need your BU ID to set up your profile. If you do not remember your BU ID, please contact the alumni office at alumni@bu.edu.

How do I register for the Alumni Online Community if I graduated in 2011 or later?


Good news! If you graduated in 2011 or later, no registration is required. You log in with your full email address (including the @bu.edu part) and Kerberos password. It’s the same login you used as a student for the last four years. If you forgot your Kerberos, please visit bu.edu/tech for reset instructions.

I don’t have my BU ID number. How do I login?


Your BU ID is the number by which you were identified when you were a student at Boston University. If you used your Social Security number as your BU ID when you were a student, BU has since assigned you a BU ID number to protect your privacy. Your BU ID number is an 8-digit number with a “U” preceding. This number appears on your old student ID cards and on student loan statements.

I don’t have my Username. How do I login?


All registered alumni are assigned a default Username login in the form of either “firstname.lastname” or “firstname.lastname.gradyear”. Please try using the name you graduated with if your current name does not work.

I don’t have my Password. How do I login?


If you cannot remember or do not know your Password, please click on “Forgot Login or Password”. You will be prompted to choose a new password and answer the case-sensitive security questions that you setup when you initially registered. If you are unable to answer your security questions, you may reset your password by re-registering for the Alumni Online Community using your existing username name.

Can I change my Alumni Online Community username?


Once you have logged in to the Alumni Online Community, scroll to the bottom of “My Page” and select “Change my Login Name” that may be found under the Account Management Tools. You may setup a unique alias for your login name and Email Forwarding for Life email address. Please note that you will always be able to use your previous and new login names going forward.

How may I change my Alumni Online Community password?


Once you have logged in to the Alumni Online Community, scroll to the bottom of “My Page” and select “Change my Password” that may be found under the Account Management Tools. You will be prompted to choose a new password and answer the case-sensitive security questions that you setup when you initially registered. If you are unable to answer your security questions, you may reset your password by re-registering for the Alumni Online Community using your existing login name.

Why am I getting a message that my last name and BU ID do not match?


Please double check that you enter the “U” or “Z” that comes before your BU ID number. If you are using the correct BU ID number and still receive the error message, try any previous last names you have had such as your maiden name. If that does not work and you are still having problems, please contact the help desk and we will assist you during regular business hours.

Why am I getting a message about an invalid username/password?


Login fields are case sensitive, so first verify that your caps lock is turned off. There are three formats of your username that you may try: “yourloginname@alum.bu.edu”, “firstname.lastname” or “firstname.lastname.gradyear”.

Why am I getting a message that my login name does not match existing name on account?


If you cannot remember your previous login name, please try registering with either “firstname.lastname” or “firstname.lastname.gradyear” as your desired login name. If you are unable to register, please contact the help desk.

Online Directory & other Alumni Benefits

Where can I find the Alumni Online Directory?


The Alumni Directory online can be accessed after you have logged into the Alumni Online Community. From the right hand column “Online Community Menu,” go to the link that reads “Alumni Community,” then select “Search Alumni Directory” from the drop down menu that appears. This area of the website contains contact information for BU alumni and is only accessible to BU alumni, students, faculty, and staff behind a password-protected login.

How do I update my Alumni Online Directory listing?


Once registered, log into your Alumni Online Community home page titled “My Page”. In the middle of the webpage, select the red “Edit” text next to “Primary Address” and “Professional Info” sections. Type in any new information and then select “Update” at the bottom of the page.

How do I change my address for all BU mailings?


The mailing address you list in the Alumni Online Directory is the address that BU will use for the Bostonia magazine and other BU correspondence. To update your address, login to the Alumni Online Community to your home page titled “My Page”. In the middle of the webpage, select the red “Edit” text next to “Primary Address”. Type in your any new information and then select “Update” at the bottom of the page.

Who can see my personal information?


The privacy of your personal information is our top priority. Only you can access and update your personal profile, and only Boston University alumni may view the Alumni Online Directory information. Through your personal profile, you may limit what information is visible to other alumni in the Alumni Online Directory. Areas of the website containing private information are only accessible after password-protected login.

How to I select what personal information is available in the Alumni Online Directory?


The privacy of your personal information is our top priority. You may limit what information is visible to other alumni in the Alumni Online Directory. In the right hand navigation menu, roll over the link “Alumni Community” and select “My Profile”. In the middle of the webpage, select “Hide/Unhide Information” to view a checklist of the profile fields. Add a checkmark next to those items that you wish to suppress from displaying in your profile. You may update your selections at any time. To complete your updates, select “Update Preferences” at the bottom of the webpage.

How do I submit an update about myself to Class Notes?


Learn what’s happening with your classmates and other BU friends by browsing the Class Notes. You can submit your own update anytime.

How do I get an Alumni Card?


Your alumni card is now available online! You no longer need to wait for your alumni card to arrive in the mail to take advantage of your alumni benefits. Log into the Alumni Online Community and select “Print Alumni Card” at the top of your Alumni Online Community homepage. If you would prefer a printed card, please call, email, or stop by the BUAA during business hours—we’ll be happy to print one for you. Check out the benefits you can get with the Alumni Card.

Mailing Lists & Email Forwarding for Life

How do I select what topics and events I want BU to email me about?


Once registered for the Alumni Online Community, login to your Alumni Online Community home page titled “My Page”. Under “Account Information and Broadcast E-mail Settings”, select the red “Change Your Preferences”. Add a checkmark next to those categories of emails that you wish to receive from BU. You may update your selections at any time. To complete your updates, select “Submit” at the bottom of the webpage. You can also update your email preferences anytime by simply clicking on any email from the BUAA in the “Email Preferences Page.”

As a recent graduate, will my student email account expire?


No. All recent graduates (2010 and after) may keep their student email accounts for life. They will never expire. If you graduated before 2010, you are invited to setup an alumni Email Forwarding for Life email address, which allows you to provide friends and family with one email address for your lifetime. This Email Forwarding for Life email address will not expire. Please visit IS&T for more information on email and email forwarding.

What is the difference between an email account and Email Forwarding for Life?


Email Forwarding for Life is not an email account, as it does not store messages for your review and reply. Rather, it forwards mail sent to your permanent (lifetime) alumni email address to your current personal email account. For example, if your username with Boston University’s Alumni Online Community is “smith” and you have a personal email account with Gmail listed as smith@gmail.com then: smith@alum.bu.edu (Email Forwarding for Life email address) forwards mail to smith@gmail.com (personal email account). Why would I want an Email Forwarding for Life email address?


Email Forwarding for Life email address allows you to provide friends and family with one email address for your lifetime. You can explain to everyone that no matter where you reside, no matter how many times you change jobs/ISPs or email addresses, they will always be able to reach you at the lifetime email account. As long as you update the Alumni Online Community in the Email Forwarding for Life section with your current personal email account address, your lifetime forwarding service will automatically send you any messages received through your lifetime account.

Alternatively, you may create a customized automated reply to be returned to anyone who sends email to your Email Forwarding for Life address.

How do I setup my Email Forwarding address?


First, register for your Alumni Online Community account. Once you login to the Alumni Online Community, open the drop down list under “Alumni Online Community” in the navigation bar at the top of the webpage and select “Email Forwarding”. In the box marked “Email Destination” enter the email account where you would like to have your messages forwarded, then select “Submit”. On the next screen, select “Finish”.

To verify that it is working properly, send a test message to your new alumni address (yourusername@alum.bu.edu) and make sure you receive that message at the account you specified. Please note that there is often a short delay. Once you receive your test message, you are ready to distribute your new alumni address to your family, friends, and co-workers. If you did not receive the test message, please email your full name, your username and the destination email address to aochelp@bu.edu. Our Alumni Online Community help desk will respond to your request during regular business hours at the University.

How may I setup an automated reply for my Email Forwarding for Life address?


If you choose to set this up, a customized automated reply will be returned to anyone who sends email to your Email Forwarding for Life address. In your automated reply message, you may wish to include an alternative contact method such as a phone number or mailing address. Once you login to the Alumni Online Community, scroll over “Alumni Online Community” in the grey navigation bar at the top of the webpage and select “Email Forwarding”. In the field marked “Email Auto-Response” please enter your automated reply text. Select “Submit” and on the next screen, select “Finish”.

Can I change the 'From' or 'Reply-to' fields to my Email Forwarding for Life email address?


Your personal email program, such as Gmail or Yahoo, determines this capability. Some email programs support this capability better than others. Please check with your email provider customer service for assistance.

What about spam?


In accordance with our privacy policy, BU does not sell or give away the email addresses for alumni. Alumni Email Forwarding for Life addresses (with the @alum.bu.edu) do not generally go through the Spam Assassin filtering because they are routed on a different server from student, faculty and staff email addresses (with the @bu.edu). Your personal email provider will have its own set of spam filtering criteria that you should work with through the provided interface. If you forward email and you find that messages sent to you are not getting through, check your personal email account spam/bulk/trash folder to make sure the messages were not filtered on that end.

Other Questions

How do I register for the Fitness & Recreation Center?


Alumni who want to register for FitRec need to have setup an AOC account first. Once the AOC account is active, visit the FitRec website and click “Join FitRec.” Enjoy the use of competition and recreation pools, a two-story cardiovascular fitness and weight training center, indoor jogging track, climbing wall, two gymnasiums with seven multipurpose courts, racquetball and squash courts, a cafe, and hundreds of recreational classes (i.e. yoga, fitness, dance, cycling, swimming).

How do I post a job or internship for BU alumni and students?


The BU Center for Career Development will help you find great employees for your organization and help current BU students or recent alums at the same time. Jobs or internships can be posted throughout the year, at any time, at no charge. To post a job or internship online, visit Career Services online and click the “For Employers” tab on the upper right corner of the webpage or call (617) 353-3590.
