One Day the Will

Father

says to call back
if it fits

in           to

my busy
schedule.

There is a time
we [will] talk

His hair white and gloss as paper.

The veins in his hands; slugs plump with ink.

The paper.
His sign.

Ryan Van Winkle is reader in residence at the Scottish Poetry Library and the Edinburgh City Libraries. He is an active member of The Forest Arts Collective, runs a monthly literary cabaret called “The Golden Hour,” and is an editor at Forest Publications. His work has appeared in Gutter Magazine, New Writing Scotland, and The American Poetry Review. He was recently awarded Salt Publishing’s Crashaw Prize. His debut collection is due in late 2010.
