Andrew Inglis: Physics
What made you decide to choose your graduate field?
I believe that the methods of physics are a powerful tool to explore many different aspects of our world.
How did you get started with your research and mentor?I entered the university knowing that I wanted to work with my adviser. Although I didn't know what topic I wanted to work on, I admired his view of interdisciplinary science. I talked to him about working in his group even before I accepted at the University. I believe that he appreciated such a proactive communication, and it helped me get a head start in the group when entering.
What are your plans for the future?
I am not sure, but that is ok. The great thing about getting a PhD in science is that you learn how to think about and solve involved, complex problems and answer involved, complex questions. This ability is needed in many aspects of our society, from universities, to private companies, to non-profit organizations, to the government. I can't wait to see where I end up!
Do you have advice for future grad students?
Graduate school is a great place to learn some of the most powerful skills you will ever learn in your life. This is because of the great people you interact with, emulate, and learn from. You should use this to your advantage. But, keep in mind that you have the freedom to be creative while in graduate school, and you can meld learning from others with your own creative sense of what you want to know and be able to do. More often than not this creativity is rewarded if you are confident about it, and it will make you one in a million.
