M. Dominika Kulinski :BME

What made you decide to choose your graduate field?

I want to do product design, specifically design of medical devices. I chose to pursue a graduate degree in Manufacturing Engineering because my undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering did not teach me how to design for manufacturability. I had learned the key elements to consider biologically, but I lacked manufacturing and design background.

How did you get started with your research and mentor?

As a senior undergraduate in Biomedical Engineering I worked in the Klapperich laboratory for my senior project (undergraduate thesis) and was involved with the development of microfluidic diagnostic devices. I developed a microfluidic platform and an instrumentation system to use electroosmotic flow (EOF) to streamline DNA sample preparation techniques for such applications as DNA fingerprinting. I am continuing similar research with a new diagnostic device.
