A Welcome from the AGEP Fellow

Welcome to Boston University’s chapter of the Northeast Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate. BU has partnered with 10 other universities to form the Northeast Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (NEAGEP). The NEAGEP program is one of 26 NSF-funded Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) programs in the US. The goal of the NEAGEP is to increase the number of students receiving doctoral degrees and entering the professoriate in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). We are particularly interested in recruiting, supporting and mentoring students of those population groups underrepresented in STEM fields; African-American, Hispanic, Native American/Native Alaskan, Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian/Polynesian, Asian (excluding Asian Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, and Thai).

The NEAGEP office also partners with the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) to administer the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. The SURF Program is designed to promote access to graduate education for talented undergraduate students, especially those from minority groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. It is our goal to provide these students with skills that will make them strong candidates for graduate work.

As time passes, we hope to become a strong resource for the BU graduate community. We are still in the process of building and shaping AGEP at BU. During this stage we would love to hear your thoughts on what events and resources could best serve the graduate community at BU (agep@bu.edu). We look forward to hearing from you.
