Welcome to the NEAGEP Program at Boston University
Boston University joins the University of Massachusetts at Amherst,
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Pennsylvania State University, and
Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, to form the Northeast
Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate. In 2005, five new
Alliance members joined the alliance, including the University of Connecticut,
the University of Maine, the University of New Hampshire, the University of
Rhode Island, and the University of Vermont. The NEA partners with five historically
minority-serving institutions (Bennett College, Jackson State University, Lincoln
University, Medgar Evers College, and the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez)
to share ideas and build strategies to increase the participation of underrepresented
minorities in graduate education.
The NEAGEP Program Office is a resource for the University community
to assist with promoting access to graduate programs in science, mathematics
and engineering for underrepresented minorities. In cooperation with the Undergraduate
Research Opportunities Program, the NEAGEP Office also manages the Summer
Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. AGEP assists members
of the University community with promoting activities aimed at graduate recruitment
for underrepresented populations as well as serving as a central source for
information about such activities on a University-wide basis.
An initiative of the National
Science Foundation (NSF), the Alliances for Graduate Education and the
Professoriate (AGEP) program seeks to increase significantly the number of
Black (African-American), Hispanic and American Indian/Alaskan Native (Native
American) students receiving doctoral degrees in all disciplines funded by
NSF. Specific objectives of the AGEP Program are to:
- develop and implement innovative models for recruiting,
mentoring, and retaining minority students in doctoral programs
- develop effective strategies for identifying and supporting
underrepresented minorities who want to pursue academic careers.
