The African Studies
Center places strong emphasis on multi-disciplinary education,
language preparation, and participation in African Studies
Center public events. Students in African studies at Boston
University choose from among 96 courses drawn from fourteen
departments of the College of Liberal Arts and university
programs and taught by Core Faculty in Liberal Arts and the
professional schools of Education, Law, Management, Public
Health, and Communications.
The African Studies
Center has historically chosen not to grant degrees, but rather
to enhance the interdisciplinary content of departmental degrees
through a series of "matrix" programs. These programs,
including the Graduate Certificate in African Studies, strongly
encourage students within the College of Liberal Arts and
professional schools to take African-content courses and to
enrich their disciplinary training with area studies content.
