Consortium on Gender, Security & Human Rights: Congolese women cannot avoid putting themselves in dangerous situations if they are to earn money and feed their families. Poverty rates are above 85% in South Kivu; in 2008 11.7% of this population suffered severe food insecurity. Women’s work in markets and mining exposes them to violence and sexual exploitation.
