Imagine sitting around a living room discussing art, science, and politics with Boston University Professor of English and former United States Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky (at right), Nobel Laureate and Boston University Professor of Physics Sheldon Glashow, or former United States presidential candidate Michael Dukakis. Every other Monday, Trustee Scholars and distinguished members of the University community do just that—gathering informally for an "Evening at Home" discussion at the home of Elizabeth Shannon (pictured below), the Program Director of the Trustee Scholars Program. Robert Pinsky

Elizabeth Shannon The "Evening at Home" series is just one of the ways the Trustee Scholar Program has been designed to allow undergraduates to immerse themselves in the intellectual and cultural life of Boston University—and Boston—to the absolute fullest. "I chose to come to Boston University because of the extras," explains former Trustee Scholar Jack Busta, who later graduated first in his class at MIT's Sloan School of Management. "I believed, and still believe, that having a close cadre of other highly motivated students makes a university education that much more meaningful."

In addition to the "Evening at Home" series, sophomore Trustee Scholars attend a second series of lectures devoted to a specific theme of broad interest. Recent lectures delivered by prominent Boston University faculty include Professor of Mathematics Robert Devaney on "Chaos Games and Fractal Images," Professor Jonathan Ribner on "Picasso," Nobel Laureate Sheldon Glashow on "Physics," and Professor Farouk El-Baz, Director of the Center for Remote Sensing, on "The Rise of Egyptian Civilization."

The Program also covers the transition to college life, including special orientation sessions and peer advising. In addition, Trustee Scholars have their own academic advisor—Professor Kevin Smith of the Physics Department—who is available to serve as a mentor and provide guidance.
