40 Club and Intramural Sports

BU’s Club Sports range from badminton to water polo. From informal play to expert instruction and intercollegiate competition.

Intramural Sports are also very big at BU. Every semester, more than 7,000 students participate in 15 different sports. Our signature intramural sport is ice broomball. Think of it as ice hockey with no skates and a broom for a stick (it’s a favorite among BU students).

24 NCAA Division 1 Varsity Athletics

BU is a member of the Patriot League, Hockey East, and the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

  • Our biggest claims to national sports fame are in varsity ice hockey. The BU Men’s Hockey team, winner of five NCAA championships, and we’ve sent more players to the NHL than any other college or university.
  • BU Women’s Soccer took three of the last five Patriot League titles.
  • The Women’s Field Hockey team boasts several All-Americans and won three out of the last four Patriot League titles.
  • And our Men’s Basketball team has made six appearances in the NCAA playoffs.

Facilities

Here are some of the places where you might opt to work out, join a team, or cheer from the stands.

Fitness & Recreation Center

One of the benefits of being a BU student is your built-in membership to our FitRec Center—more than six acres of workout space and sports facilities under one roof, including a climbing wall, Olympic size swimming pool, basketball and squash courts, and even a lazy river. Here, you can take part in more than 400 different credit and noncredit classes each semester, dozens of intramural sports for all skill levels, and club sports including intercollegiate and tournament competition.

Agganis Arena

Is it a hockey rink, a rock concert venue or a comedy showcase? Trick question—it’s all three. Agganis Arena, a multipurpose sports and entertainment center, also houses the John Hancock Student Village, a 10-acre hub of student living, activities and athletics. Agganis is also home to the BU Terriers Men’s Hockey Team.

The DeWolfe Boathouse

The home of the BU men’s and women’s crew teams gives racing fans a great view of the annual Head of the Charles Regatta. Located on the Cambridge side of the Charles River, our boathouse balcony will also give you a spectacular view of the Boston and BU skylines.
