Safety on Campus

The Clery Act

The Clery Act requires universities to publish an annual report every year by October 1 that contains three years of campus crime and fire safety statistics and certain campus security policy statements. Please visit our safety website for the report. Hard copies are available upon request.

Our Commitment to Safety

Boston University’s safety program has been nationally recognized and awarded a Jeanne Clery National Safe Campus Award. Among the elements of the program are:

  • BU’s own fully deputized police force of 60 academy-trained police officers, including several emergency medical technicians
  • More than 100 “blue light” emergency call boxes on campus
  • 24-hour security guards at each large residence hall
  • An escort security service that walks students around campus at night

BU Alert, Our Campus-Wide Alert System

An imminent hurricane. A school closing. A fire in a lab. In emergencies when minutes may be critical, BU can communicate quickly with large numbers of people through BU Alert.

To sign up for alerts, students, faculty and staff provide their contact information—email address, home phone and cell phone. In an emergency, Boston University sends information to all contacts via email, voice call and text message. The system not only distributes critical information quickly but also reduces the spread of misinformation.
