Professional Organizations

Most of BU’s Schools and Colleges offer their students membership in one or more professional organizations. Some are honor societies recognizing high academic achievement. Others provide valuable opportunities—attending professional conferences nationwide, networking with industry professionals and broadening your understanding of their field.

Engineers, for instance, can join Engineers Without Borders, while students in the College of Communication can join the Public Relations Student Society of America. If you’re in one of our other schools or colleges, you have options such as the Pre-Law Society, American Hotel & Lodging Association, or International Affairs Association.

See the Student Activities Office website for a complete list of professional organizations or visit the website of the School or College of your choice.

Student Government and Politics

Boston University offers lots of ways to pursue political activism, whether you’re a born leader, want to play a role in student affairs or feel strongly about politics at the national level.

You can participate in student government at three levels:

  1. Boston University Student Government, representing the interests of all undergraduates at BU, brings events and activities to campus.
  2. School and College Student Governments act as liaisons to the administration of each school in the interest of the student body.
  3. Residence Hall Associations (RHAs) work on behalf of students to enhance the quality of life in their residences.

And if student government doesn’t satisfy your political yearnings, you might want to join College Democrats, College Republicans, the NAACP or one of several other political groups on campus.

Community Service

BU sponsors dozens of community service programs with the city of Boston each year.

  • Be a Big Sibling to a kid who needs a hero.
  • Tutor a recent immigrant in English.
  • Help out with HIV/AIDS education programs.
  • Help plant an urban garden.

Join projects through the community service organizations listed on the Student Activities Office website or get involved through the BU Community Service Center (CSC). With a volunteer base of over 1,500 people, the CSC contributes over 75,000 hours of service annually in the greater Boston area and around the US.

First-Year Student Outreach Project

You don’t have to wait until classes to jump in. Our First-Year Student Outreach Project (FYSOP) lets you move in a week early to participate in a service project. You can choose from 11 different issue areas, from children to human rights to the environment. You’ll work with more than 800 new students and 150 upper class staff leaders—a great way to get to know your classmates from day one.

Alternative Service Break

Every year, hundreds of student volunteers take off for destinations in the U.S. and Canada with Alternative Service Break (ASB) programs through the Community Service Center.

Greek Life on Campus

BU is home to 12 fraternities and 12 sororities on campus, which makes up a small but active Greek community. There are also citywide Greek organizations and Greek honor societies.
