  Varsity Athletics
Boston University offers 22 NCAA Division I varsity sports, 12 for women and 10 for men, and is a member of America East, Hockey East, Colonial Athletic Association (Wrestling), and the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

BU has a history of nationally known athletic teams, highlighted in 1980 at the Winter Olympics, when four Boston University hockey players made the difference for the United States in their historic victory over the Soviet Union. At the Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002, four former Terrier hockey players made up Team USA. The Boston University hockey team has won four NCAA championships (1970/71, 1971/72, 1977/78, 1994/95) and appeared in the 1997 NCAA championship final. The Terriers also qualified for "Frozen Four" action in 1989/90, 1990/91, and 1993/94.

The Men's Basketball team has made 6 appearances in the NCAA playoffs, with the last showdown in 2002. In addition, they've gone to the America East regular-season championship six times, the last time in 2004, and the America East tournament championships five times.

The Boston University Women's Crew team won both the 1991 and 1992 Eastern Sprints and National Championships.

The Men's Soccer team qualified for the NCAA playoffs in 2004, their eighth time since 1990; the Women's Soccer team reached the NCAA tournament in 2000, 2001, and 2003; and the Women's Field Hockey team has competed in the NCAA tournament five times since 1990.

The Beanpot
You might think with only four teams—and the same four teams year after year—that no ice hockey tournament could possibly generate so much rivalry, emotion, and excitement. But the annual Beanpot Tournament is Boston's collegiate athletic event of the year. On two Monday nights in February, Boston University, Harvard, Northeastern, and Boston College square off against each other in the TD Banknorth Garden, home of the Bruins (hockey) and Celtics (basketball). The winner takes home a silver bowl suitable for those famous Boston baked beans, and a year's worth of bragging rights.

In 2007, the Terriers captured its 28th Beanpot victory—more than the three other contenders combined and its 11th of the past 14. Boston University has played in 46 of the tournament's 56 title games. BU's dominance in the Beanpot has led some students to refer to it as the "BU Invitational Tournament."
