Most of the Schools and Colleges at Boston University offer students membership and involvement in one or more professional organizations. Some of these organizations are honor societies to which students of high academic achievement are invited to attend.
Other professional organizations provide the opportunity to attend student and professional conferences nationwide and develop leadership skills as well as offer career preparation. Professional organizations also provide a way for students to network with industry professionals and broaden their understanding of their discipline.
Engineers, for example, can join ASME, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. ASME serves to expand on classroom teaching by offering real-world applications to engineering students. ASME members tour industrial plants, attend lectures by professional engineers, participate in student conferences and seminars, and network with peers, professors, and engineers in industry.
