  Religious Life

Perhaps the greatest attribute of Boston University is the diversity of its student body and faculty. Many diverse religious organizations provide students with opportunities for worship, fellowship, and personal development. They encourage students to be themselves, to remember and reflect on their religious heritage, and to take part in organizing programs.

The Office of the University Chaplain, located at Marsh Chapel, serves as the headquarters of religious life at BU and promotes an atmosphere of openness and interfaith dialogue among all faith groups. The Office of the University Chaplain responds to the spiritual needs of students, faculty, staff, and others and includes Chaplains and Chaplain Associates who are available for pastoral counseling. The staff also includes students who are able to help members of the Boston University community contact clergy and organizations in their faith tradition.

Below are some of the many faiths found on campus. See Marsh Chapel Religious Life for more information.

Marsh Chapel
Marsh Chapel offers Christian worship, Bible study, counseling, fellowship, and educational outreach programs. A Protestant Interdenominational Service of Worship is held Sunday mornings; Catholic Masses are celebrated at Marsh Chapel each Sunday throughout the day.

Newman House
Located at 211 Bay State Road, Newman House is the Catholic Center at Boston University. It houses the offices of the Catholic Chaplains as well as a daily chapel and spaces for studying and gathering. The Newman House sponsors worship services, retreats, Bible study, prayer groups, weekly suppers, counseling, a variety of social events, and much more. Sunday liturgy is celebrated in Marsh Chapel.

Hindus on Campus
The Hindu Student Council meets for weekly worship sessions and monthly puja. Though not affiliated with Boston University, Hindu Services are held regularly within campus parameters at the Ramakrishna Vedanta Society Church at the corner of Bay State Road and Deerfield Street. Here, services are held each Sunday; lectures are held Thursday evenings.

Hillel House
The Hillel House is the center of the Jewish community of Boston University. Hillel is a student-governed organization that welcomes all styles of Judaism and supports religious, cultural, educational, and social interests of the Jewish faith. Services are held every Friday night and Saturday and on all religious holidays.

The Hillel House offers a Kosher Dining Hall, a resource center for Israel programs, housing, graduate programs and career information, a library, a Beit Midrash (a space for Jewish learning), cable TV, and lounge. Boston University Hillel opened a new facility on Bay State Road in Spring of 2005.

Islamic Society
The Islamic Society at Boston University serves the Muslim community on campus. The office is located at the George Sherman Union, 775 Commonwealth Avenue, in room 242. Daily prayers are held in this office four times a day. Weekly Jom'eh prayers are held each Friday in the basement of the George Sherman Union.
