Boston University students have a long-standing tradition of volunteering in the greater Boston community and positively affecting the world around them. There are student-coordinated groups offering ongoing projects and one-time opportunities for involvement.
There is also the Community Service Center, a non-profit organization that coordinates volunteer projects for BU students, serving to broaden the scope of students' academic experience through service and responsibility.
The Community Service Center has 10 student-run programs with
over 1000 volunteers placed throughout the year, including winter,
spring, and summer breaks. Semester opportunities include tutoring
youth, helping with youth recreational programs, delivering
meals to homebound people with AIDS, salvaging food for shelters,
and recycling and environmental field work. Winter, spring,
and summer break opportunities include community service trips
to various states and the First Year Student Outreach Project.
First Year Student Outreach Project (FYSOP)
FYSOP
is a community service orientation for first-year students run
by upperclassmen. Incoming freshmen arrive on campus a week
before classes begin and work to address issues in the following
areas: Children, Disabilities, Elderly,
Environment, Gender Focus, HIV/AIDS Awareness, Homelessness
and Housing, and Hunger. Through this program, students have
the opportunity to perform community service while also making
new friends and familiarizing themselves with Boston. Service
projects range from building homes and visiting elderly citizens
to beach cleanups and playing with children.
