Academically talented students wishing to further investigate a topic in their major or minor concentration may complete an independent project, known as a Work for Distinction. Usually completed the senior year, students undertake a two-semester independent program of study culminating in a thesis and an oral examination in front of a faculty committee. Qualifying students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0; some departments may require a higher grade point average.
The hallmark of Work for Distinction at Boston University is
self-directed study. Students report regularly to a faculty
supervisor for guidance, but most of the project is independently
conceived and created. Students gain valuable research skills
as well as the benefit of having completed a sustained research
project similar to those in graduate school. |
