  Research
Boston University has long been an institution of cutting-edge research and thinking. Currently, our sponsored research funding exceeds $450 million on projects ranging from disease prevention to the effects of globalization to the benefits of nanotechnology. Our researchers explore life in space, under water, in the lab, throughout societies, around the world, and across disciplines. In addition, Boston University continues to receive grants and awards to advance our research projects and begin new ones.

In 2003, the University received $128 million from the National Institutes of Health to fund construction of a National Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases and Biodefense. In 2004, the National Science Foundation awarded the University a $20.1 million grant to create the Center for Learning in Education, Science, and Technology (CELEST), a multidisciplinary, collaborative research effort focused on developing a model of how the brain learns.

The research underway at Boston University contributes to the knowledge and understanding of our world, but perhaps more importantly, our professors mentor and encourage the next generation of scientists and thinkers. Indeed, undergraduates have many opportunities to perform important research alongside our faculty as early as their freshman year. Boston University is a place where learning goes beyond the classroom, and we allow students to explore subjects in a way they might never have thought possible.
