Among the classrooms, labs, residence halls, and dining facilities on campus is an assortment of academic facilities designed to enhance learning and foster research. Listed below are just a few of the many unique places that create the landscape of Boston University.

Life Sciences and Engineering Building
Opened in May 2005, the 187,000-square-foot Life Sciences and Engineering Building houses the College of Arts and Sciences' departments of biology and chemistry, the College of Engineering's department of biomedical engineering, and the University's bioinformatics graduate program. Among the building's offerings: 41 laboratories, 45 offices, conference rooms, a 150-seat seminar room, and the chemistry department's Center for Chemical Methodology and Library Development, currently developing a library of molecules for biological research and drug development.

Photonics Center
Boston University's $80 million, 235,000 square-foot Photonics Center houses state-of-the-art laboratories devoted to developing new light-based technologies for industrial and consumer products. The center also includes teaching laboratories and classrooms for the College of Engineering and is home to a unique collection of light-based art.

Coit Observatory
The Judson B. Coit Observatory is located on the roof of the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) building at 725 Commonwealth Avenue. Located in the School of Education, the Early Childhood Learning Laboratory is a preschool and observation center serving as a learning resource for preschool educators throughout New England. Boston University students may conduct formal observations and work with children in the laboratory and participate in the development of new activities.

Metcalf Center for Science and Engineering
Metcalf contains classrooms and instructional laboratories as well as labs devoted to physics, chemistry, biology, and biomedical research. In fact, there is a waiting list of researchers from around the world wanting to visit Boston University and conduct their research at the Metcalf Center. Also within the Metcalf Center is an endangered amphibian zoo and a lab that is 98 percent dust-free.

Center for Remote Sensing
The Center for Remote Sensing acts as a facility for scientific research in archaeology, geography, and geology. Dubbed a "Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing" by NASA, the Center uses satellite images and other data from airborne and ground sensors to study the Earth and its resources, particularly groundwater. This includes the monitoring of environmental changes due to both natural processes and human activities.

Center for Computational Science (CCS)
The Center for Computational Science provides a forum for the multidisciplinary exchange of ideas among researchers, educators, and students. CCS coordinates and promotes computationally based research, fosters computational science education, and provides for the expansion of computational resources and support. In addition, CCS holds seminars, workshops, and symposia that highlight advances in computational science.

Mugar Memorial Library
One of 23 libraries on campus, Mugar Memorial Library offers more than 2 million volumes, 4 million microform items, and thousands of current serial subscriptions. In addition, students have access to any of 16 additional academic and research libraries within the Boston Library Consortium.

African Studies Center (ASC)
The African Studies Center serves as a major regional and national resource for the study of Africa and for the dissemination of research and resources to the educational community and the wider public. Its programs and activities take place within the social sciences, the humanities, communications, law, public health, and environmental studies. It cooperates with other African studies programs across the country in such areas as African language teaching, linkages to African partner institutions, study abroad, library resources, and curriculum development. Many distinguished African leaders and scholars have joined the ASC community as visiting scholars, distinguished lecturers, teachers, and mid-career fellows.

The Institute for Economic Development (IED)
The Institute for Economic Development (IED) focuses on the economic problems of developing countries by providing facilities and a supportive intellectual environment for students, faculty, and visiting scholars researching the problems of economic development and the related areas of economic growth, international economics, and financial institutions. The IED hosts a weekly seminar series, organizes workshops and conferences, produces and disseminates discussion papers, and administers research grants.

The Institute on Race and Social Division (IRSD)
The Institute on Race and Social Division promotes scholarly investigation of the causes, consequences, and methods of resolution of divisive conflicts between social groups within the modern nation-state. Much of the Institute's work focuses on the study of these issues within American society, particularly in regard to race.
