The curricula of all the Schools and Colleges at Boston University are structured around a central core of courses in the liberal arts. Liberal arts courses completed at a regionally accredited institution with a grade of C or better often will be awarded credit in transfer. Professional courses will transfer at the discretion of the School or College of admission. No transfer credit is granted for physical education, health, or ROTC courses, or for such activities as internships, independent study, orientation, choir, band, or student service. Boston University does not award credit for correspondence classes.
The basic unit of credit at Boston University is the semester hour. A normal, full-time course load is 16 hours per semester, which usually represents four courses of 4 semester hours each. Transferable coursework completed under a semester-credit-hour system is awarded with an equal number of semester hours. Coursework completed under a quarter-credit-hour system is converted into semester hours by awarding two-thirds of the total number of quarter-credit hours.
Students accepted for transfer to the University will usually
receive a tentative evaluation of transfer credit shortly after
notification of admission. In most instances, the advising office
of the School or College of admission issues the final evaluation.
For more information, please see our Advanced
Credit Guide.
Each School and College has its own degree and residency requirements. Transfer students are required to fulfill all graduation and residency requirements of the School or College of admission. For further details, please refer to the Undergraduate Programs Bulletin.
