LIBRARY INFORMATION

The ACOR Library is the centerpiece of the ACOR services provided to researchers and scholars from around the Middle East but the world. It as a large collection of books and periodicals on the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the archaeological sites within its boundries. It has also a comprehensive collection of archaeological books on the Arab Middle East. Over 35,000 volumes are on hand at this time and donations and puchases are expanding the reference collection rapidly.

Students and researchers know of the contents of the ACOR Library. A sample of the routine visitors include residents of the United States, Canada, Germany, Finland, Switzerland, France, Italy, Belguim, Netherlands, Australia, and Spain, as well as daily visits from students and professors from Jordan.

In an effort to provide better service to all, the library has undertaken the task of developing a common database between the other institutes in Amman as well as the local universities. In the interest of efficiency and economy, efforts have been made to eliminate duplication in the Jordanian libraries and the institutes. If one source of publications is available, the libraries are not redundant and obtain other valuable and needed publications. Cooperation and development of assets and resources is a key goal to the ACOR Library.

Plans include expansion of subject matter resources. This effort is essential to keep the Center current in support the needs of researchers. As noted in fellowship funding, other programs receive more dollars than archaeology. Efforts are underway to support this trend and maintain resources to support the new fields, as well as the archaeology related fields.

The updating of furniture and computers has largely been due to the U.S. Embassy, USAID and USIA, the Canada Fund, the Embassy of Canada, and the Government of Canada. There is a close relationship between the Canadian Embassy and the United States Embassy in that both are working to support ACOR and the Library to meet the needs of the future.

Wireless connection is currently available for residents and fellows. A collection of maps of Jordan is also maintained for reference and planning. These resources are very valuable as these documents were, until recently, considered classified by Jordan.

Future expansion of the electronic and computer assets is planned but is slow in developing, due to limited resources.

In the effort to provide better services to researchers, the ACOR Library is providing additonal information and contacts for resources in the Middle East. The links below provide a bibliographic reference list (archaeology), information on donation procedures and tax deductions and other libraries in Amman and the Middle East. Your assistance is requested in providing additional electronic or other addresses of libraries specializing in Middle Eastern references. If you are looking for a reference, write the ACOR Library at:

You can expect a response in a few days, as the work week and the hours of operation are slightly different from most parts of the world.
