Residency and Visa Permits

As you enter the country at Queen Alia International Airport, you are given a stamped permit in your passport with a specific duration, normally one month - plus a "blue card" (colors may change) which you usually fill out in the aircraft. This is also stamped. The cost of this tourist visa varies with country of origin and fees may change.

To renew this permit for an additional 60 days, you should appear, in person, at the nearest police station (preferably Sweileh Police Station) with your passport and the entry card before the month has expired.

You will be given an extended permit stamp in your passport. If you overstay your visa permit without renewal, you will be charged a fine (JD1.500 per day) at the airport when you leave.

If you are going to be in the country for longer than three months, you will either have to leave the country and re-enter (possibly a trip to Syria or Egypt) or you will have to take an HIV test to have your tourist visa extended. If you leave the country, you receive a new one month visa upon re-entry, and this can then be extended again to three months. If you stay on the first visa, you will pay JD 20.000 for the HIV test, and get your initial visa extended for a second time to a total of six months. For stays in JOrdan longer than six months, you should plan to apply for a one-year residence permit. Consult the Jordanian Embassy beforehand for the procedure.
