Banking

Personal checks take up to four (4) weeks to clear at local banks. In order to exchange currency for Jordan dinars on the spot at the bank, you need to bring:

a. Travelers Checks drawn on a U.S. Bank

b. U.S. dollars in cash. Please note that U.S. $100 bills have been widely counterfeited in the area, thus some banks may not take them.

c. American Express, MasterCard or VISA card. You may draw cash on your card at the local AMEX office (near Commodore Hotel), the BritishBank in Shmeisani (MasterCard), the Housing Bank (Plaza Hotel office only for your VISA card) and BritishBank Automated Teller Machines at 2nd Circle (by Far East restaurant) and Abdoun Circle (Visa from PLUS network only). Call the Banks to check on the availability and functioning of the cash machines, before departing to the banks.

d. ATM cards of some kinds (Cirrus, Plus) will work in the British Bank machines in Abdoun and 2nd Circle and at some Jordanian bank ATM machines.

Plus network cards work at the Arab Bank machine in the parking lot of the Intercontinental Hotel.

You must have your passport when visiting the bank to conduct any business.
