Security and Local Customs

Jordan is a rather safe place in which to stay, study and travel. It is a Muslim - Arab country and although very progressive, it is still conservative by western standards. These are a few things that you can do to help reduce any risk to a minimum and ensure that you have an enjoyable visit to Jordan.

  • Consider the practices of your host country. Women and men should not wear shorts.

  • Women should not wear short skirts, sleeveless tops, tank tops, etc., in public.

  • Women should not travel alone. Traveling in pairs is better. Bring a male, if possible on trips into town.

  • Be alert for suspicious persons and anyone watching your movements.

  • Vary your routes of travel.

  • Do not stand out more than you have to. Dress appropriately.

  • Women do not ride in the front seat of taxis.
