Life in Amman

Amman is a pleasant city spread over numerous hills and valleys. The road network is constantly improving. Traffic is also getting heavier. Accomplishing something in Amman takes longer than it does in many other countries. The pace of life is slower and more enjoyable.

Food is plentiful and good restaurants are spread throughout the city. Deliveries are made also to ACOR by local restaurants and fast food chains (pizza, etc).

Taxis and buses run throughout the country on schedules (not readily apparent that there is a schedule, sometimes) and are inexpensive to moderate in price.

Appointments are usually scheduled easily, after letters of introduction are presented. Local custom includes a glass of tea before business and should be considered mandatory. It is easy to get most work completed as people are willing to talk about their work, their country and life, with pride in the numerous developments in Jordan.

Evenings are hot in the summer and cool to cold in the winter. Some business is conducted in the evening ,but generally the evenings are left for social activities or exploring the shops and restaurants in Amman.

There is a constant military and police presence in the country. Because of this there is little crime by western standards and life is generally very safe.

See the Library pages for additional information on Jordan and the Middle East.
