Description of Excavation

Excavation of architectural features and midden contexts at Khirbet el-Qarn al-Qubish.  Architectural features include extant fortification walls and gateway, domestic and public spaces inside the walls.  Some structures are visible at ground level, while others, including the gate and several interior structures, are preserved to a height of up to 2 meters.  We will be placing units inside the gate itself, in one of the flanking towers next tot he gate, in at least two interior buildings, and in midden deposits on the west side of the site.  Khirbet el-Qarn al-Qubish is a fortified agricultural village site, located on a hilltop near the edge of the Dead Sea escarpment.  On a clear day, you can see Jerusalem.
