Dates of Excavation: 3 July-24 August 2000
Description of Excavation
This year, excavations will take place in the region of Edom in Southern Jordan with two distinct phases. Fieldwork will extend from July 3 to August 11. Participants will explore the largest ancient metalworking factory in the Near East with a team of leading scientists. Project specific staff will present a weekly lecture series covering Near Eastern archaeology, Bedouin ethnography, biological anthropology, environmental archaeology, archaeozoology, and other topics. Students will learn the basics of both excavation, artifact processing and new developments in "Digital Archaeology." On alternate weekends, students will be transported from the camp to either the Red Sea town of Aqaba or the Jordanian capital, Amman. It is possible to travel around the country from either of these centers.
Following the excavation phase, students will participate in laboratory work at the Base Camp until August 24. Participants will engage in laboratory studies of the artifacts recovered in the excavations. Students will learn the basics of artifact processing, conservation, Digital archaeology, and other topics.
When the project ends, students will travel to Israel for a week of touring. This includes a trip to the Israel Museum and other sites. After two days of organized touring, students will be free to travel independently.
