The Eastern Hasa Late Pleistocene Project (EHLPP)

Dates of Excavation: 28 May-9 July 2000

Description of Excavation

The EHLPP has been documenting Upper Paleolithic (UP) and Epipaleolithic (EPI) settlement and subsistence strategies in the Wadi al-Hasa area of west-central Jordan. This region was characterized by a Pleistocene lake/marsh and has exceptional preservation of site materials. Previous field seasons in 1997 and 1998 tested six sites: Tor Sadaf (transitional UP and early UP), Thalab al-Buhira (UP), Ain al-Buhira (late UP), Yutil al-Hasa (late UP, early EPI, late EPT), Tor Sageer (early EPI), and Tabaqa (late EPI). In the summer of 2000, we will continue excavations at Tor Sadaf and Thalab al-Buhira, reopen excavations at Tor al-Tareeq (early and middle EPI), which was first tested in 19984 and 1992, continue mapping Tabaqa, and conduct a flint/chert raw material source survey.
